BEIJING – Chinese technology giant now helped consumers to pay amounts by using their palms as a card.

In its report, MIT Technology Review revealed that multinational conglomerate Tencent earlier conducted tests on the first of its type of touchless palm payment which let consumers pay for goods and services without carrying any typical card.

In the country of 1.4 billion, the tech giant’s social media app WeChat hits 1 billion users and is replacing traditional bills across several cities.

In one of the clips on the Chinese short video App TikTok, a consumer can be seen paying for a soda merely using his palm.

MIT Technology Review’s report further stated that the feature was rolled out some time back and had properly been released in Guangzhou, the leading financial center in China.

The touchless palm payment is capable to distinguish the palms of individuals. People can now make payment by waving their hands up to a few inches from the camera, with no facial or fingerprint recognition required.

Despite unforeseen technology advancements, payment by password, fingerprint, and facial recognition technology remain the most popular methods with top brands using them.

China’s rival US has been testing palm-scanning payment technology in Amazon’s Seattle store, per reports. Meanwhile, experts have warned of privacy concerns as such tech requires a large database of biometric information linked to users,

Twitter plans to charge $20 per month from verified account holders: reports

Twitter plans to charge $20 per month from verified account holders: reports Days after taking over the microblogging site Twitter, Elon Musk announced on Sunday that the verification process of the social media platform will be revamped immediately.

“Whole verification process is being revamped right now”, Musk said in his tweet but he did not shared further details in this regard.

Reports claimed that Twitter is planning the charge for the blue check mark verifying the identity of its account holder.

Users would have to pay $4.99 per month for Twitter Blue subscription or they will lose their “verified” badges if the project is implemented, technology newsletter Platformer reported on Sunday.

The new owner of the social media platform is yet to make a decision in this regard but reports said that it is likely that verification will become a part of Twitter Blue.

Meanwhile, the Verge reported on Sunday that subscription fee for Twitter blue will be hiked to $19.99 per month from $4.99 a month.

The microblogging site introduced its first subscription service, Twitter Blue, in June last year. The new service includes various features including an option to edit tweets.

Tesla/SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is finally the owner of the microblogging site, Twitter, as $44 billion purchase deal was finalized on Thursday.

The 51-year-old business tycoon made the announcement on Twitter in an official statement.

In the statement, Elon explained his reasons for acquiring Twitter, saying, “There is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and far left wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide in our society.”

“In the relentless pursuit of clicks, much of traditional media has fuelled and catered to those polarised extremes, as they believe that is what brings in the money, but, in doing so, the opportunity for dialogue is lost.”

He added, “That is why I bought Twitter. I didn’t do it because it would be easy. I didn’t do it to make more money. I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love. And I do so with humility, recognising that failure in pursuing this goal, despite our best efforts, is a very real possibility.”

The Twitter bio of the one of the world’s richest persons reads as “Chief Twit”.

Meanwhile, videos circulating on social media shows Elon roaming in Twitter headquarters.

TikTok, one of the most famous and used social media applications, made shocking revelations of removing a whopping amount of videos violating its guidelines during a recent report.

The app’s officials reported that more than 113 million videos have been taken down between the pride of April and June of this year in accordance with the company’s quarterly transparency report 2022. Although the number is 113 million, it represents just 1 percent of total videos uploaded during the three-month period.

The report stated that the common reason for removal was the violation of TikTok’s policies around minor safety. Other reasons included illegal activities, regulated goods, adult nudity and sexual activities. The company said it utilizied the automated tools, and human review to sift through content causing violations.

According to multiple media outlets, about 15,351,388 videos were taken down from Pakistan with a proactive removal rate of 98.7 percent, 97.4 percent for removals before 24 hours, and 97.3 percent for takedowns before any views.

For the record, Pakistan ranks second for the largest volume of videos taken down by TikTok. The United States of America topped the list with nearly 18 million videos removed.

For the unversed, TikTok has more than one billion global users, although digital rights experts believe that more transparency is crucial in a market like Pakistan where the app faced four bans between October 2020 and November 2021.

LAHORE – The strategic alliance with 1LINK will enableEZ Wage to access all member banks on 1LINK’s portal and will facilitate 24/7 disbursement in real-time when employees opt to withdraw a portion of their earned wages using the state-of-the-art EZ Wage mobile application.

Singapore-based EZ Wage is one of the first financial wellness platforms in Pakistan that offers Earned Wage Access (EWA), allowing users the benefit of retrieving a portion of their hard-earned money before payday. This revolutionary employee benefit not only boosts the morale and performance of employees but also benefits employers by reducing the workload of their HR/Finance departments and does not tie up their own working capital.

Needless to say, the backdrop of inflation and global recession coupled with rigorous downsizing during the pandemic has spurred people into considering sources of borrowing money, such as friends and family as well as loan sharks which may not necessarily work in their favour in the long run. This renders the future of digitized payments and EWA quite promising in the region.

Present at the occasion were Mr Najeeb Agrawalla, CEO 1LINK, Fatima Batool, Founder of CEO EZ Wage and Mr Hisham Naseem, Global CFO EZ Wage, along with their respective teams. Both parties expressed mutual interest in shifting payments to digital channels so that the end beneficiaries can become more self-reliant and secure when it comes to their money.

Mr Hisham Naseem, Global CFO of EZ Wage commented, “This partnership with 1LINK will enable EZ Wage to fulfil its mission of revolutionizing financial wellness for the masses and will advance women empowerment and financial inclusion in the country.”

Ms Fatima Batool, CEO of EZ Wage, added, “We are honoured to onboard 1LINK as our official Payment Solution Provider in Pakistan. This is another leap towards financial inclusivity and wellness for the masses. We hope that the enablement of real-time withdrawals makes monetary emergencies less daunting for the employees we are catering to. Not only is 1LINK the most secure channel to route funds, but it is also the most reliable.”

The signing of this partnership agreement highlights the move towards financial inclusion in the region as well as the digitization of payments. Owing to EZ Wage’s focus on women and other marginalized segments of society, this alliance is expected to help the underbanked in emerging markets.
